As business owners, we have always recycled shipping boxes, envelopes and anything else we could. It does help that as former online retailers selling cloth diapers and similar products, customers tended to be of a like mind.
The one area both Amanda & I have been concerned about that we had no control over was our web hosting. The companies we had dealt with own the servers and we run it from a distance. Well, we did our research and we are very pleased to announce that our web server is now GREEN!!!
Green web hosting goes a long way to helping with the environmental impact of energy use. Be More Than a Mom works in partnership is a company whose program stands out from the pack for a number of reasons . . .
One, our partner is now using renewable energy to both power and cool their servers, whereas a number of green hosts only offset the electricity used to power their servers. That represents a big difference, because servers generate a lot of heat. For every watt of electricity that a server uses, 1-2 watts of electricity are typically required to cool it.
Two, our partner has invested in Green-e certified Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). Green-e is run by the Center for Resource Solutions, and both sets standards for US renewable energy project and verifies those projects. Green-e certified RECs are verified, tracked and monitored.
What the heck’s a REC?
Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) are tradeable credits representing all the environmental benefits of 1 megawatt hour of renewable energy. So when our server farm's owner purchases 4,009 Texas wind RECs, it’s basically paying a Texas windfarm to generate renewable energy on our behalf.
Three, our server farm's partner has purchased RECs for 130% of the electricity used to power and cool its servers.
We are very pleased to be partnered with a company who feels as we both do about working to help keep Mother Earth green.
